Washington is a new town in Sunderland metropolitan area in postcodes NE37 and NE38, built from the late 1960s onwards as one of England's last designated new towns. Despite its 'new town' designation, Washington has deep historical roots – George Washington, first President of the United States, traced his ancestry to the village of Washington Old Hall, which is preserved as a National Trust property.

The town is home to the Nissan car plant – one of the most productive in Europe – and has significant industrial and commercial activity alongside its residential communities. Housing is predominantly post-war and new-town era properties, much in private ownership.
